In cake filtration processes, where particles in a suspension are separated by forming filter on the medium, resistances of and medium cause specific pressure drop which consequently defines process energy effort. The micromechanics formation (interactions between particles, fluid, other medium) must be considered to describe pore clogging, growth consolidation correctly. A precise 3D modeling approach these effects is resolved coupling Computational Fluid Dynamics with Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM). This work focuses development validation CFD-DEM model, capable predict during solid-liquid separation accurately. model uses Lattice-Boltzmann (LBM) directly solve flow equations CFD part DEM for calculation particle interactions. developed enables 4-way consider particle-fluid particle-particle results this presented two steps. First, validated an empirical single settling velocity transition regime fluid-particle flow. also enhanced additional determine influence. Second, silica glass from water pressurized housing at constant experimentally investigated. measured cake, interference good agreement simulations, demonstrating applicability analyzing optimizing processes.
